Katy Cotterell

Katy is an Art Psychotherapist working with individuals and groups.

From Katy:

I am an Arts Psychotherapist registered with the HCPC and the British Association of Art Therapists. I also hold a BA(Hons) in Fine Art and a member of the British Association of Art Therapists. I have a background working in education and have been involved with DIY cultural organising for twenty years.

My previous training and work has included working with adults in acute and community settings. This has included supporting people with varied access requirements and complex needs associated with disability, and illness. I therefore also work with the recognition that social, political and cultural conditions shape lives and can have a disproportionate impact on emotional wellbeing.

I also have experience in working therapeutically with children and young people with complex difficulties including attachment difficulties, bereavement and behaviour challenges. I am particularly passionate about promoting a culture of early invention and psychoeducation and believe this is equally important when working with adults.

My practice is underpinned by the principles of psychodynamic psychotherapy, integrating a person-centred and intersubjective approach. I work with a high degree of relational sensitivity and believe the experience of feeling heard and understood can be an important first step in making sense of our experiences.

My work at Caya is currently focused on working with Adults. This includes working with neurodivergent people and people of all genders. I'm skilled at helping people come to terms with their thoughts, feelings and experiences. I'm not here to judge or fix but to work together to help you create some breathing space.

What is Art Psychotherapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that traditionally uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication. My approach makes space for unconscious communications as well as talking, which can be also contained within artmaking alongside the therapeutic relationship.

Art is used as a medium to address and work through emotional difficulties, which may be confusing or distressing or at times too difficult to put into words. This often includes working sensitively with emerging themes in sessions. This can include: playing around with art materials, making mistakes and thinking about things from different angles. I offer sessions from Caya Therapy's purpose built art room, which I believe holds the potential for more in depth creative exploration within sessions. There is no expectation of artistic skills or experience.
